Demens, legemidler: Galantamin (Galantamin, Reminyl)
Galantamin finnes som depotkapsler på 8 mg, 16 mg eller 24 mg. Kapselen tas en gang daglig om morgenen. Anbefalt startdose er 8 mg daglig i minimum fire uker. Deretter økning til 16 mg dersom bivirkningene ikke er plagsomme. 16 mg er den dosen som regnes som nødvendig for å få full effekt av dette medikamentet.
Eventuelt kan dosen økes til 24 mg daglig etter fire uker. Igjen er det mage-tarm bivirkninger som er hyppigst. Symptomer som påvirker psyken, vekt, væskebalansen, nervesystemet, ernæring, lever, hjerte eller hud kan forekomme. Dersom man mener å ha positiv effekt, men opplever mye bivirkninger, gjelder for alle preparatene at man kan trappe ned dosen ett nivå for å redusere bivirkninger.
