Balansenerven, betennelse: Diagnosen

Akutt svimmelhet, kvalme, falltendens mot den syke siden og ufrivillige øyebevegelser, og forverrelse av plagene ved bevegelse, er de typiske symptomene. Ved legeundersøkelse vil man se at øynene ufrivillig glir langsomt til ene siden for deretter raskt å hoppe tilbake - dette fenomenet kalles nystagmus. Legen vil også teste hørsel og sjekke ører og nervesystemet. Diagnosen styrkes dersom hørselen og nervesystemet ellers er normalt.

Svimmelheten kan være svært intens i ett til to døgn, og det er ofte behov for innleggelse i sykehus disse dagene. Det er også aktuelt med innleggelse dersom diagnosen er usikker.
