Normal seksuell funksjon: Manglende lyst?

Tidligere mente ekspertene at kvinnens seksuelle respons alltid begynte med seksuell lyst, seksuelle tanker og fantasier, og at fravær av slike var uttrykk for at det forelå en forstyrrelse. I en stor studie av kvinner mellom 18 og 59 år fant man at den vanligste seksuelle forstyrrelsen var liten eller manglende lyst på sex, noe som forelå hos cirka en av tre kvinner og som varierte lite med alder. Tilsvarende funn har man gjort i andre studier. Det er uklart hvor mange av disse kvinnene som rett og slett rapporterer lav eller manglende spontant oppstått seksuell lyst, men som opplever at lyst utløses under seksuell aktivitet og har god sex.
