Stemmebånd, stramme: Årsaker
Det finnes ingen synlige forandringer i stemmebåndene eller deres muskulatur som forklarer tilstanden. Men når legen ved hjelp av små speil eller endoskop, ser ned på stemmebåndene, kan hun se at stemmebåndene er sammentrekte når pasienten forsøker å puste kraftig ut og inn. Årsaken til denne lukkingen av stemmebåndsspalten er ukjent. Tilstanden oppstår episodisk, slik at vedkommende pasient opplever episoder med pustevansker.
Tilstanden oppfattes av mange leger som funksjonell. Det vil si at det er en reaksjon på psykisk stress. Forekomsten er økt blant personer med nervøse lidelser. Men det er også påvist sammenheng med brystbrannsykdom, bihulebetennelse, store fysiske anstrengelser, yrkeseksponering overfor irriterende gasser, miljøallergener og/eller forurensende stoffer.
