Svimmelhet, behandling

Svimmelhet kureres ikke ved å unngå situasjoner som utløser svimmelheten.

Selvhjelpspakker med informasjon om balansesystemet og råd om egenbehandling er nyttig - du må forstå problemet for å kunne gjøre noe med det.

Du må selv passe på å være forsiktig med tobakk og alkohol, og redusere eventuell bruk av beroligende midler og sovetabletter.

Ingen medisiner har vist seg å være effektive mot svimmelhet, men i akuttsituasjoner med samtidig kvalme kan kvalmestillende medisiner være nyttige.

Dersom du opplever plutselig og sterk svimmelhet ledsaget av brystsmerter eller lammelser i kroppen, kan det være tegn på hjerteinfarkt eller hjerneslag, og du bør hasteinnlegges på sykehus. Det samme gjelder dersom du får akutt svimmelhet og samtidig nedsatt hørsel eller synsforstyrrelser.
