Seksuell dysfunksjon hos kvinner: Faktorer som påvirker seksuallivet
En rekke faktorer er forbundet med redusert subjektiv opphisselse. Det kan være distraksjoner (tankene sirkler om andre ting enn sex), negative forventninger etter tidligere dårlige seksuelle opplevelser, seksuell angst, slitenhet og depresjon. En partner som sliter med sin seksuelle tilfredshet, stress, problemer med å bli gravid og et langvarig parforhold ("alt blir rutine") er alle faktorer som er forbundet med redusert seksuell lyst. Motsatt styrkes evnen til opphisselse når du har en stabil tidligere og nåværende mental helse, god kontroll over egne følelser og et godt selvbilde, gode tidligere seksuelle erfaringer og positive følelser for partneren.
Noen kvinner har en dårlig opplevelse av sitt første samleie med en mann. De ble påtvunget samleie, voldtatt, noe som kan sette dype spor og ødelegge for fremtidige seksuelle opplevelser.
Medikamenter som nye antidepressiver (SSRI) har hos noen en negativ innvirkning på seksualiteten. Det samme synes å kunne gjelde enkelte blodtrykksmedisiner (betablokkere).
Mange sykdommer har negativ innvirkning på seksualitet. Det kan gjelde ufrivillig lekkasje av urin eller avføring, kroniske smertetilstander, stoffmisbruk, multippel sklerose, nyresvikt, diabetes, sykdommer i nervesystemet, kreftsykdom.
