Venøs blodpropp i hjernen: Prognose

Ved tidlig diagnose er prognosen god og full restitusjon eller mindre nevrologiske skader kan forventes hos ca. 80 prosent. Ca. 5 prosent dør i akuttfasen og dødeligheten over noe lengre tid er nær 10 prosent. Koma, kramper eller underliggende sykdom har liten innvirkning på korttidsprognosen og bør ikke begrense behandlingstilbudet. På lang sikt vil ca. 2 til 4 prosent kunne få en ny episode med venetrombose.

Omtrent 10 prosent av pasientene har vedvarende nevrologiske utfall, som språkproblemer og sensoriske og motoriske symptomer ved ettårsoppfølging. Imidlertid opplever omtrent halvparten av pasientene mer kroniske, ukarakteristiske symptomer som vedvarende hodepine, tretthet, depresjon eller diffuse nevropsykologiske problemer.
