Influensa

Influensa er for de fleste ufarlig, men sykdommen kan være svært plagsom i perioden med feber og muskelverk. Risikogruppene bør vaksineres.

Hva er influensa?

Influensa er en betennelse i luftveiene forårsaket av influensavirus. Tilstanden medfører vanligvis feber, slapphet, tørrhoste, hodepine og muskel-/leddsmerter. Snue og sår hals i tillegg er ikke uvanlig.

Etter noen dager kan hosten bli løsere og man kan få slim og oppspytt. Dårlig matlyst, magesmerter og eventuelt oppkast er heller ikke uvanlig, særlig hos barn.

Sykdommen opptrer ofte i epidemier, det vil si at det på et gitt tidspunkt finnes et stort antall syke i befolkningen. Slike epidemier forekommer stort sett hvert år i vintermånedene, fra sent i desember til tidlig i mars.

Influensa er en viktig årsak til sykdom og død. Økt dødelighet ved influensa rammer først og fremst risikogruppene som på forhånd er svekket på grunn av kronisk sykdom eller høy alder. Det er anslått at det i gjennomsnitt dør 900 personer i Norge årlig som følge av sykdommen. Noen år kan så mange som 2000 personer dø på grunn av influensa.
