Divertikkelsykdom: Forløp

Blant personer med divertikulose vil kun 10-25 prosent over tid utvikle symptomer og plager. De øvrige, altså 75-90 prosent, forblir symptomfrie. Noen får gjentatte episoder med divertikulitt. Har du hatt en episode med divertikulitt, er risikoen liten (ca. 2 prosent per år) for å få en ny betennelse.

En akutt betennelse kan gå over til blodforgiftning. Derfor innlegges pasienter med uttalte symptomer i sykehus, mens milde tilfeller kan behandles hjemme. Betennelser kan også føre til lekkasje av tarminnhold til bukhulen, noe som utløser en alvorlig bukhinnebetennelse, eventuelt dannelse av falske ganger (fistler) mellom tykktarmen og andre organer eller innvendige verkebyller (abscesser). I slike tilfeller er kirurgiske inngrep nødvendig. 

Prognosen ved divertikkelsykdom er god.
