Patellar tendinopati, Jumpers knee: Årsak
Årsaken til lidelsen er ikke helt avklart. Patellarsenen kan bli irritert, og de sentrale fibrene kan overrives som følge av mye hopping. Når man lander med bøyde knær etter et hopp, vil så godt som hele belastningen bli lagt på knestrekkesenen. I satsen belastes også senen svært mye.
En teori om årsaken er at det ved overbelastninger kan oppstå små rifter i senen. Riftene fører til en lokal irritasjon og betennelse hvor kroppen forsøker å reparere skaden. Det arret som da dannes, er ikke like elastisk som den opprinnelige senen, og faren for nye skader og vedvarende plager øker.
Nyere kunnskap kan tyde på at patellar tendinopati skyldes at deler av senen blir klemt ("impingement") ved nedre kant av kneskålen.
