Nakkesmerter, uspesifikke: Prognose

Nakkesmerter går vanligvis over av seg selv i løpet av dager eller uker. Mange har tilbakevendende plager, og noen utvikler et kronisk forløp. Nakkeplager er i mange industrier den hyppigste årsak til sykefravær.

Hvis smertene skyldes overbelastning, har tilstanden god prognose. Ved psykososiale årsaker blir tilstanden oftere kronisk. Opp til 20 % av pasienter med akutte nakkesmerter vil utvikle kroniske plager og hos 5 prosent forårsaker tilstanden betydelig arbeidsuførhet.
