Prognosen ved panikkangst er god dersom du får behandling: Med behandling vil omtrent ni av ti med panikklidelse oppleve at de blir bedre eller helt friske.

Ubehandlet vil en panikklidelse vanligvis bli kronisk, det vil si vedvarende. Intensiteten av plagene kan variere betydelig med perioder uten anfall, eller bare milde anfall med få symptomer.
Med behandling er prognosen god. Ni av ti vil oppleve at symptomene blir bedre eller de blir helt friske. Langtidsprognosen er best med psykologisk behandling (kognitiv atferdsterapi), men medikamentell behandling kan noen ganger også være til hjelp. Effekten av medikamentell behandling vil for mange forsvinne etter at behandlingen er avsluttet, og denne formen for behandling har mulige bivirkninger. Medikamentell behandling skal aldri gis alene, den skal gis i kombinasjon med samtaleterapi og oppfølging. Sjansen for å lykkes med behandlingen, den mer vedvarende effekten og mangelen på bivirkninger gjør at kognitiv atferdsterapi uansett er den anbefalte veien å gå.
Mange opplever at symptomene kommer og går. Det kan være tider der du ikke har panikkanfall i det hele tatt, eller du har bare noen få anfall med mindre plagsomme symptomer. Til andre tider kan du ha to til tre anfall for uken, og symptomene er ille.
Dersom du har agorafobi i tillegg til panikklidelse er sjansen ekstra god for at du blir helt frisk med riktig behandling.
