Allergiforebygging hos spedbarn?: Andre faktorer

Man har mistanke om at den mikrobielle tarmfloraen (bakteriene i tarmen) har innflytelse på utvikling av allergisk sykdom, men det foreligger enda ikke bevis for en årsakssammenheng. Studier kan tyde på at tilskudd av probiotika til høyrisiko-spedbarn kan gi nedsatt forekomst av lett atopisk eksem, men det er ikke funnet effekt på forekomsten av allergi eller andre gunstige langtidseffekter. Lavt inntak av fisk, omega-3 fettsyrer, høyt natriuminntak eller utilstrekkelig inntak av antioksidanter kan ha innflytelse på utvikling av luftveissymptomer og astma - men det mangler resultater fra gode vitenskapelige studier.

Enkelte mener at en viktig årsak til økningen i allergi, skyldes at barna overbeskyttes. De fratas muligheten til å utvikle et sunt immunsystem fordi de eksponeres for lite overfor allergifremkallende faktorer. Denne hygieneteorien anfører at eksposisjon for infeksjonssykdommer, allergener, etc. beskytter mot utvikling av allergisk sykdom. Nyere tids forskning synes å gi støtte til denne teorien, men siste ord er ikke sagt enda.
