Fuktighetsbevarende behandling

Fuktighetsbevarende behandling er viktig for å lindre tørr hud og forhindre forverringer av eksemet. Smør med fuktighetsbevarende kremer eller salver flere ganger daglig. Kremer som inneholder karbamid (urea), er vist å lindre eksem, og kan forebygge eller utsette perioder med forverring. Det finnes karbamidkremer som kan forskrives på blå resept for personer med atopisk eksem. 

Oljebad anbefales av mange, men effekten er manglefullt studert. Man vet heller ikke sikkert hva som er mest effektivt når det gjelder karbad og dusjing. Sannsynligvis er det nyttig med daglig hudvask ved aktivt eksem og best med sjelden hudvask ved eksem med lite plager/mildt eksem. Badet/dusjen bør være kortvarig, maks 10 minutter og vannet bør være kroppstemperert. Såpe bør unngås, istedenfor kan man bruke fuktighetsbevarende midler.

En nyere norsk studie (2020) viser at daglig oljebad fra andre leveuke ikke reduserer risiko for at barnet skal utvikle atopisk eksem fram til ett års alder. En slik behandling har med andre ord ingen forebyggende effekt hos hudfriske barn.
