Aortastenose, forsnevring i aortaklaffen: Årsaker

En forsnevring av aortaklaffen som oppdages før 50 års alder skyldes som regel en medfødt 2-bladet aortaklaff (normalt er den 3-bladet). I aldersgruppen 50-70 år er fortsatt en stor andel forårsaket av 2-bladet klaff, men de som får sykdommen etter fylte 70 år har som regel en normal 3-bladet klaff. De får sykdommen på grunn av alders- og belastningsforandringer i klaffen. Giktfeber (betennelser i ledd og hjerte etter streptokokk halsbetennelse) var tidligere en vanlig årsak, men dette er nå svært sjelden.
