Symptomer

Mange pasienter med HEV-infeksjon får ingen plager. De har såkalt asymptomatisk infeksjon. De med symptomer får oftest et influensaliknende sykdomsbilde med feber, allmenn uvelfølelse, hodepine, magesmerter, kvalme og eventuelt gulsott. Sykdomsbildet skiller seg ikke fra de andre formene for akutt virusbetennelse i leveren.

Sykdomsforløpet kan inndeles i tre faser: en periode med forvarsler (prodromalfasen), en periode med gulsott, og så tilfriskningsfasen. Sykdommen går vanligvis over etter et par uker uten å etterlate noen varig skade. Infeksjonen blir i motsetning til hepatitt B og C aldri kronisk hos personer som ellers er friske.

I prodromalfasen oppstår generelle symptomer og tegn som muskel- og leddsmerter, lett feber, nedsatt matlyst, vekttap (2-4 kg), noe inntørring og ømhet i øvre høyre side av magen - en ømhet som forsterkes ved fysisk aktivitet.

I gulsott fasen oppstår gulsott. I denne perioden blir urinen mørkfarget og avføringen lys til hvit. Kløe er ofte til stede. Andre symptomer kan være elveblest og diaré.
