Melkeallergi: Årsak
I kumelk finnes over 25 ulike proteiner (allergener) som kan gi reaksjoner hos melkeallergikere. Noen er allergiske kun mot en av dem, men de fleste har allergi overfor flere. Melkeproteiner finnes i melk og i andre dagligvarer som ost, smør og sjokolade. Ved allergi dannes antistoffer mot normalt harmløse stoffer, allergenene. Når melk inntas, reagerer en allergikers overømfintlige immunsystem feilaktig på melkeproteinene og danner antistoffer som skal nøytralisere disse allergenene. Vi har da en immunologisk (allergisk) reaksjon.
Man kan ikke bli allergisk overfor morsmelk. Men hvis moren selv bruker kumelk i sitt kosthold, kan kumelkproteiner overføres til barnet via morsmelken og sensibilisere og i noen tilfeller gi plager hos barnet.
