Plantar fasciitt: Årsak

De aller fleste tilfellene av plantar fasciitt skyldes overbelastning av plantarfasciens feste til hælbeinet. Dette skjer først og fremst ved langvarig ståing, ved mye gåing eller løping på hardt underlag og ved bruk av dårlig skotøy. Idrettsutøvere som driver med mye hopping eller langdistanseløping, er ekstra disponerte. Personer som er overvektige, eller som er i lite fysisk aktivitet, er også mer utsatte. En avvikende fotstilling som hulfot eller plattfot øker risikoen for å utvikle plantar fasciitt.

Ved noen revmatiske sykdommer som Reiters sykdom eller Bekhterevs sykdom kan sykdommen debutere med dobbeltsidig plantar fasciitt.

Ekspertene har tidligere ment at overbelastningen fører til en betennelse ved festet for bindevevsplaten. Nyere forskning tyder imidlertid på at plantar fasciitt først og fremst er en slitasjetilstand.
