Polymyalgia revmatika: Årsaker

Begge tilstander er trolig uttrykk for en betennelse i veggen på pulsårer (arteritt). Årsaken til at denne betennelsen oppstår, er ukjent. Man tror det er både ytre faktorer og arvelige faktorer som medvirker. En av teoriene er at tilstanden kan være utløst av en infeksjon, men dette er ikke etablert som et faktum.

Forekomsten av PMR og AT er høyere i Skandinavia enn i andre deler av verden. I Minnesota i USA er det også høy forekomst, noe en setter i forbindelse med høy innvandring av skandinaver langt tilbake i tid til denne delen av USA.
