Magemerter
Interstitiell cystitt er i utgangspunktet en ufarlig, men til tider svært plagsom tilstand.

Interstitiell cystitt kalles også "smertefull blære syndrom" (painful bladder syndrome). Tilstanden er karakterisert ved smerter i blære og underliv og økt vannlatningstrang med hyppige vannlatninger både dag og natt. Det er typisk at smertene lindres ved vannlatning og øker når blæren fylles. Ofte føler man en unormal sterk og hurtig innsettende trang til vannlating. Plagene er langvarige, og de har en tendens til å komme og gå. Diagnosen forutsetter at man har utelukket en lang rekke andre sykdommer som kan gi liknende plager.

Det er beregnet at ca. 20 personer per 100.000 har tilstanden. Cirka 90 prosent er kvinner. Alder ved debut er vanligvis 30-50 år.
