Kreftrisiko ved aktinisk keratose
Aktinisk keratose kan utvikle seg til plateepitelkreft. De fleste tilfellene med aktinisk keratose utvikler seg ikke til kreft, og så mange som en av fire går tilbake av seg selv. Likevel ser en at flekkene i mange tilfeller kommer tilbake. Det finnes per i dag ikke sikre metoder for å forutsi hvilke aktiniske keratoser som vil utvikles videre til kreft.
Beregninger over risikoen for at det skal oppstå plateepitelkreft, varierer betydelig. I en studie fra California ble det funnet en samlet forekomst av plateepitelkreft i løpet av ti år hos 17 prosent av de med aktiniske keratoser, mens blant de uten var forekomsten knapt seks prosent.
Dersom det utvikles plateepitelkreft, er risikoen for spredning av kreften beregnet til under tre prosent.
