Årsak

Årsaken er ukjent. Symptomer og tegn skyldes økt hjernetrykk og opphovning av synsnerven (papilleødem). En rekke mekanismer er foreslått, men det finnes ingen åpenbar forklaring på hvordan tilstanden oppstår. Det er mulig at nedsatt tømning av veneblod fra hjernen kan ha en betydning.

Antatte risikofaktorer er nylig vektøkning, noen medikamenter og systemiske sykdommer som Addison sykdom, hypotyreose, hypoparatyreoidisme, anemi, søvnapné, SLE, polycystisk ovariesyndrom.
