Tilstanden er vanligvis langsomt tiltakende. Tidlig diagnose og behandling kan gi delvis tilfriskning eller bremse forverringen av symptomer.
Blindhet er den eneste alvorlige langtidskomplikasjonen. Nedsatt syn foreligger i 25 prosent av tilfellene og kan påvises på diagnosetidspunktet, under behandlingsforløpet eller senere.

Fullt utviklet sykdom har dårlig prognose og krever snarlig kirurgi, men ofte uten særlig effekt.
