Posttraumatisk stresslidelse: Prognose
Forløpet av posttraumatisk stressforstyrrelse er svingende, men bedring inntrer over tid i de fleste tilfeller. I en norsk undersøkelse etter en stor eksplosjonsulykke i en malingsfabrikk hadde rundt fire av ti i den mest eksponerte gruppen en posttraumatisk stressforstyrrelse, mens andelen blant dem som ble lite eksponert, var en av ti. Etter fire år var det imidlertid bare 15 prosent (ti personer) i den mest eksponerte gruppen som fortsatt hadde klare posttraumatiske stressymptomer. En annen ulykke på et oljefelt i Nordsjøen viste samme mønster. Omkring en av tre utvikler langvarige symptomer.
Generelt finner vi i den internasjonale litteraturen at blant de som blir eksponert for alvorlige traumer, vil faktorer før hendelsen bety mer for variasjonen i symptomer enn karakteristika ved selve hendelsen.
I de tilfeller der mindre skader eller påkjenninger har medført etterfølgende symptomer, er prognosen god. Plagene vil vanligvis gå over på noen dager, eventuelt uker. Bruk av diagnoser som posttraumatisk stresslidelse er feil i slike situasjoner.
