Nødlanding
Beslutningen om å lande før destinasjonsstedet innebærer en vurdering av flere faktorer: Behov for eventuelt å bli kvitt noe av drivstoffet, kostnader, om flyet kan lande på den nærmeste flyplassen og om medisinske ressurser er tilgjengelige på denne flyplassen.
Det er flykapteinen som sammen med flykontrollen koordinerer alle operasjonelle beslutninger og som er ansvarlig for eventuell nødlanding. Alle øvrige involverte som kabinpersonale, frivillige hjelpere eller medisinsk bakkepersonale kan gi sine anbefalinger, men det er flykapteinen som tar den endelige beslutningen.
De vanligste grunnene til nødlanding er hjertestans, akuttsituasjoner knyttet til svangerskap og fødsel, hjertesymptomer og mistanke om hjerneslag.
De fleste akuttmedisinske problemer håndteres ombord i flyet. Hvis en hendelse skjer i cruising høyde, kan det ta mer enn 30 min å lande flyet selv om avstanden til flyplassen er relativt kort.
