Søvnløshet: Årsak

Det er vanlig å dele insomni i ren insomni og insomni som sameksisterer med annen sykdom. 

  1. Ved rene søvnforstyrrelser menes plager hvor man ikke kan finne en årsak til insomnien i andre tilstander. Det vil si at det verken er kroppslig sykdom eller psykisk sykdom som er årsaken, og man kan heller ikke finne noen forklaring i omgivelsene.
  2. Komorbid insomni er søvnplager hvor en finner sykdom eller sosiale årsaker som kan forklare/utløse tilstanden. Ofte vil den komorbide insomnien bestå til tross for at den utløsende tilstanden blir eliminert.

Komorbid insomni er mest vanlig. Svært mange sykdommer kan medføre vedvarende søvnplager. Hyppige årsaker er depresjon, angst. Hjerte eller lungesykdommer kan medføre pustebesvær om natten. Smertetilstander kan holde deg våken. Nesetetthet, f.eks. polypper i nesen, kan gi pustebesvær og oppvåkning. Listen over årsaker er lang. Tilstander som rastløse bein (restless legs) og søvnapne gir også søvnløshet, men dette regnes som søvnsykdommer. 

Mange medisiner kan også medføre søvnproblemer som bivirkning, et eksempel er en type hjertemedisiner som kalles betablokkere. Sosiale årsaker kan være støy eller bråk, skiftarbeid, uregelmessig døgnrytme.

Ved primær søvnforstyrrelse finnes ingen årsak. Søvnforstyrrelsen er ofte utløst av en eller annen påkjenning, men vedvarer etter at problemet er løst.
