Hypokondri: Diagnostiske kriterier
Karakteristisk for hypokondri er vedvarende opptatthet av muligheten for å ha en eller flere alvorlige og fremadskridende kroppslige lidelser. Pasienten gir uttrykk for vedvarende plager. Normale og trivielle fornemmelser og utslag tolkes ofte som unormale eller foruroligende av pasienten. Som regel vil oppmerksomheten være konsentrert rundt ett eller to organer eller kroppssystemer (pasientens antatte forklaring). Uttalt depresjon og andre former for angst kan være både årsak og konsekvens av hypokondri.
Det er ikke lett å si med sikkerhet at pasienten lider av hypokondri, også når kroppslig sykdom er tilstrekkelig utelukket. Noen andre tilstander som kan minne om hypokondri er depresjon, generalisert angstlidelse, panikklidelse, tvangslidelse, paranoid psykose og somatiseringslidelse.
